New “World Famous Potatoes” Design Launches June 18, Supporting IPC Research and Infrastructure
EAGLE, ID – [June 4, 2025] – It’s bold. It’s black. It’s back. The Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is proud to announce the return of the state’s most beloved license plate: the black-and-white “World Famous Potatoes” plate. Launching June 18, 2025, this sleek, retro design is a modern take on the iconic 1950s plate that helped put Idaho® potatoes on the map.
Idahoans can reserve their new “World Famous Potatoes” plate at IdahoPotato.com or by visiting their local DMV office.
This limited-edition specialty plate is more than a nod to nostalgia—it’s a powerful symbol of Idaho heritage. For longtime residents, it’s a return to the roots of potato country. For newcomers, it’s a stylish way to say: I’m with Idaho.
“This plate is a symbol of everything Idaho stands for: heritage, spirit, and of course, world-famous potatoes,” said Jamey Higham, President & CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission. “We’re thrilled to offer Idahoans a new way to show off their state pride while also supporting meaningful initiatives that benefit our agricultural community and beyond.”
Why It Matters:
The Plate That Captures Idaho’s Story: Idaho introduced its first potato-themed plates in 1928, becoming the first state in the nation to turn license plates into a platform for state branding. The original plate featured a large embossed potato filling most of the design, and while some Idahoans weren’t eager to become rolling advertisements, tourists happily stole the plates as souvenirs. Over time, the design evolved into one of Idaho’s most recognizable and beloved symbols, embraced by collectors and residents alike. Today, “Famous Potatoes” has grown into more than a slogan—it’s become part of Idaho’s identity.
