Question

What is the best way for three people using standard ovens to bake 300 potatoes in advance for a potato bar and keep them hot until serving?

I have a big event and we are having a potato bar. The event begins at 6PM and the dinner begins at 7. We are needing to bake 300 potatoes in advance for the event. There are three of us that will bake the potatoes. None of us has any fancy ovens - just regular ones. What is your suggestion for getting the potatoes done on time and for keeping them hot for the event?

Answer

You can absolutely get 300 potatoes done with 3 home ovens, we just need to stagger batches.

Each oven will hold about 25–40 potatoes at a time, so we’ll plan on 3–4 rounds total.

Bake at 400–425°F for 60–75 minutes.

Start baking around 1:30–2:00 PM and keep rotating batches:

  • Round 1: ~2:00–3:15
  • Round 2: ~3:15–4:30
  • Round 3: ~4:30–5:45

Goal is to have the last batch done around 5:30–5:45 PM before the event starts.

Prep:

  • Scrub and dry potatoes
  • Lightly oil and salt
  • Do NOT wrap in foil

Holding (best method):

  • Put hot potatoes straight into insulated coolers lined with towels
  • Cover with more towels and close lid

They will stay hot for 2–3+ hours and keep a better texture than holding in the oven.

Backup option:

  • Hold in oven at 200°F (but skins will soften over time)
